January 9, 1969 An exhibition of Winslow Homer’s (1836-1910) graphic art goes on display at the National Collection of Fine Arts, now the National Museum of American Art. Homer is recognized as one of the leading figures in American art, known especially for his dramatic marine scenes and realistic depictions of American life. This illustration, “The Skating Season,” appeared in the Jan. 18, 1862 issue of Harper’s Weekly.
