COVID-19 Update: Travel and special events cancelled through June 1

The Smithsonian is extending the moratorium on travel and events from May 3, 2020 to June 1, 2020. This decision was made by assessing the rapidly changing situation, considering impacts to employees and programs, and honoring government travel guidelines and local policies concerning events.

No new trips or events should be planned up to June 1. If you have previously planned events or travel for after June 1, do not cancel them at this point.

As a reminder, official guidelines on travel and events are below.

  1. Cancelling International Travel: All Smithsonian international travel is canceled through June 1, 2020.
  2. Restricting Domestic Travel: All Smithsonian domestic travel is restricted to mission-critical activities through June 1, 2020. A Mission-critical trip may be approved if it has a clear connection to human or animal collection safety. Requests for exceptions shall be sent from the Unit Director to the Smithsonian COVID-19 Coordinating Team. Domestic travel shall not include activities such as routine training, conference attendance, speaking engagements, meetings (that may be managed virtually) or other related activities.
  3. Canceling in-person public programs and internal programs: All Smithsonian events, and public and internal programs have been canceled through June 1, 2020.
