Smithsonian to receive $200 million gift from Jeff Bezos

The donation is the largest in the Institution’s history.

A passion for curiosity, exploration, and wonder is at the heart of our work across the Smithsonian. As we look to new frontiers, I am pleased to announce a transformative gift of $200 million from Jeff Bezos. This represents the largest philanthropic gift to the Institution since the Smithsonian’s founding, and we are deeply grateful to Mr. Bezos for this remarkable investment in the Smithsonian’s future.

The gift is currently envisioned to be directed toward two main elements: $70 million will support the transformation of the National Air and Space Museum (NASM); and $130 million will construct and support a world-class center for education based at NASM, using revolutionary technology to engage and inspire the next generation of innovators. Though the center will live at NASM, it will benefit and engage the whole Institution. A portion of this gift will be directed to activating inquiry-based learning and education challenges that will incorporate content from across all Smithsonian units.

Under Secretary for Science and Research Ellen Stofan will be leading a group in conjunction with NASM leadership and other key stakeholders including Under Secretary for Education Monique Chism to determine next steps in activating the gift.

A key goal of this allied approach will be to reach students in underserved communities in Washington, D.C. and across the country, creating connections across the arts, sciences, and culture, including pathways to future careers. As the Smithsonian commemorates its 175thAnniversary, this historic gift to our nation will serve generations to come.

I am proud that this gift aligns so clearly with our shared vision for this great Institution and that it will serve key, budget-relieving needs while setting bold plans for the future. Thank you for joining with us as we unlock the creative potential of the Smithsonian, and as our country launches towards a brighter, bolder future.
