The Way Ahead: COVID-19 Safety Training Update

COVID-19 and the Way Ahead

The COVID-19 Safety Training has been updated to reflect the latest health and safety information and guidance as we all work together to ensure the health and safety of staff, facilities and collections, visitors, and our mission.

The updated training must be completed within 30 days of this notice or within 30 days of your start date by all staff (including affiliated staff, contractors, interns, fellows, and volunteers) working on-site at Smithsonian owned or leased properties. This training will be required annually.

The COVID-19 Safety Training, available on both Internal and External Moodle platforms, should take 30 to 60 minutes to complete. It consists of four modules covering COVID-19 basics and Smithsonian requirements as well as the voluntary use of N95 respirators at the Smithsonian. To take the training, please follow the instructions below.

  • If you have an SI network account, click HERE.to take the course in the Internal Moodle (connection to SI network required). Enter your regular Smithsonian network username and password and click the “Login” button. The course will display and will also appear on your dashboard and in your My Courses listing. If you have a Smithsonian network account, you MUST take the course in the internal Moodle to receive credit.
  • If you do not have an SI network account, but you do have an External Moodle account registered with a non-SI email address (this group includes affiliated staff and contractors), click ALTERNATE to access the course in the External Moodle. This is a way for those without SI network accounts to take the course. Enter your External Moodle account username and password or if needed, follow the instructions for “Forgotten your username or password,” to initiate a reminder/reset to your non-SI email address. DO NOT take the course in the External Moodle if you have an SI network account. Instead, see the “If you have an SI network account” instructions above.
  • If you do not have an SI network account or an External Moodle account (for example new affiliated staff and contractors, SE staff and others who did not complete the original COVID-19 safety training in Moodle), you must first create an External Moodle account using a personal email address. Use the account registration instructions to create and confirm your account. After you have confirmed your account, go to the External Moodle course link and log into the External Moodle site with your newly created username and password. If the above course link does not work, copy and paste this link (https://moodlex.si.edu/course/view.php?id=880) into your browser. When prompted for a course enrollment key, enter the code presented on the enrollment page. Do not create an External Moodle account if you have an SI network account. Instead, see the “If you have an SI network account” section above.

Information for Volunteers

Smithsonian volunteers can take the training from their VSys Live profile. After logging in, go to Online Trainings. Alternatively, volunteers can take the training in External Moodle by following the instructions above. National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute volunteers should complete the training in External Moodle. Volunteers can reach out to their supervisor for more information.

Information for Supervisors

If you supervise staff who do not have SI network accounts and will not receive this SI-wide announcement email, please provide them with the information.

The safety and health of our staff and communities are of the utmost importance. By applying what you learned in the training course, following the COVID-19 guidance, and monitoring your health, you are helping ensure the health of not just yourself, but also your family, coworkers, and communities. If you have questions, please contact SISafetyTraining@si.edu.
