Join the Smithsonian Ambassador Program

The Office of Visitor Services is excited to announce that we are recruiting for a brand-new volunteer program, Smithsonian Ambassadors. You can help our visitors in a new way, outside on the National Mall! Smithsonian Ambassadors will help visitors find the right buildings for the Hope Diamond, the Ruby Slippers, the Peacock Room and more! You’ll help them navigate the Smithsonian campus and orient them to the Smithsonian. Being a Smithsonian Ambassador is a great opportunity for someone who is enthusiastic about working with the public and sharing their excitement for discovering the Smithsonian.

Location

Smithsonian Ambassadors will be stationed outdoors on the National Mall where they will rove and engage with visitors and give brief scheduled orientations to the Smithsonian. During inclement weather, Ambassadors may be stationed indoors. Homebase for Ambassadors will be at the Ripley Center at 1100 Jefferson Drive, SW, Washington, DC 20560

Required Skills, Abilities and Qualifications

Ability to stand/rove for long periods of time
Ability to work in an ever-changing environment
Comfortable working outdoors
Flexibility and enthusiasm
Excellent verbal communication skills
Comfortable giving brief presentation to small groups
Interact with people of all ages and backgrounds
Successfully work independently and as a part of a team
Comfortable with using an iPad and doing basic internet research
Smartphone for safety and communication
18 years or older
Clear a federal background check
Wear an assigned uniform

Time Commitment

Smithsonian Ambassadors are required to complete pre-training reading and assignments and attend ALL training sessions. Training sessions include Smithsonian history and composition, volunteer resources, and visitor engagement.
