The Office of the Under Secretary for Education, the Office of the Under Secretary for Science and Research, and the Office of Communications and External Affairs are pleased to announce the release of Sustainability in Action, our ninth educational activity guide produced in collaboration with USA TODAY.

Created by Smithsonian educators and featuring the work of many contributors across the Institution, this guide will reach 1.5 million print subscribers nationwide on Sunday, April 23. Its roadmap to a better shared future features numerous illustrations of both the Smithsonian’s prolific environmental work and of young people leading the way to create a more sustainable and more just society.

A few examples in the guide include the Anacostia Community Museum’s new Center for Environmental Justice that taps into the museum’s legacy of community engagement; the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory’s collaboration with NASA on TEMPO, the first instrument to scan North America for air pollution from space; and the young leaders who work with the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute and Smithsonian Affiliate museums across the country to conserve and sustain their communities.

Sustainability in Action also enumerates 20 actions that everyone can take to be more eco-friendly, from taking the “Green Ambassador” challenge with Smithsonian Gardens to volunteering with one of the Smithsonian’s varied community science projects.

Our sincere thanks and congratulations to everyone who contributed to this impressive collection. It can be accessed and downloaded on the Smithsonian Learning Lab website.  Additional public-facing promotion for the online version will begin on Monday, April 24.

We invite you to share this tremendous activity guide with learners of all ages who are interested in putting sustainability into action, starting on Monday, April 24. For now, please enjoy a sneak peek of the publication.
