The Smithsonian Sustainability Portal gives you the power to effect local and global change
There can be no doubt we are living in a time of planetary crisis. At the same time, our workforce is one of the most dynamic, talented and passionate around. It’s time to harness our power to make real changes.
In a world where sustainability has become an imperative, the Smithsonian is taking steps toward internal transformation with the launch of its Sustainability Portal. Serving as a central gateway for staff-focused news, resources, people, and initiatives, this resource-rich digital platform is set to improve the way Smithsonian employees engage with sustainability efforts. Packed with a wealth of valuable features, the portal aims to empower individuals across the institution, providing them with the tools and knowledge needed to make sustainable choices at work, as well as in their homes and communities.
One of the portal’s key strengths lies in its comprehensive collection of resources. Whether you are searching for guidance on recycling or for the latest Smithsonian Climate Action Report, the portal will serve as the authoritative source for reports, guidance, and other internally-focused sustainability resources. From practical tips to comprehensive research, employees can access a wealth of information to support their sustainability efforts, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
Recognizing that sustainable change is driven by passionate individuals, the Sustainability Portal offers a virtual introduction to the dedicated people behind the Smithsonian’s sustainability operations. From location-based Green Teams working to implement sustainable practices on the ground to the individuals behind transformative programs like Banners to Bags, the portal connects employees with the Smithsonian’s sustainability champions. By fostering connections and promoting collaboration, the portal creates a network of like-minded individuals committed to driving sustainable change within the institution and beyond.
At the heart of the Sustainability Portal lies a wide array of initiatives that the Smithsonian is actively pursuing. Zero-waste events, climate change adaptation planning, and composting programs are just a glimpse of the sustainability-focused activities taking place within the Smithsonian. Through the portal, employees can delve into the challenges, explore innovative solutions, and celebrate the results of these initiatives. The portal not only educates and inspires, but also provides tangible opportunities for staff members to get involved and contribute to these transformative projects.
Moreover, the portal aspires to serve as the primary distribution point for all internally-focused sustainability news. Through regular news updates, the portal will ensure staff members stay informed about the latest sustainability developments and ongoing initiatives within the institution. The site will proudly serve as the new distribution point for the Sustainability Matters newsletter, housing a treasure trove of staff-produced articles in its archives. By repurposing this valuable content, the portal delivers evergreen tips and tricks to live more sustainable lives, both at work and within employees’ homes and communities.
Although the Sustainability Portal is still in its early stages, the groundwork has been laid for a highly valuable resource for staff. However, its success will rely upon the collective efforts and contributions of Smithsonian staff. A Spanish version of the website is currently in production and will enable greater access and contributions from across the Institution. The Smithsonian invites employees to actively participate, to share initiatives, news, and resources to make the portal even more robust and impactful. It is through collaboration and shared knowledge that the portal will reach its full potential, empowering staff members to drive sustainable change and shape a better future.
Together, we can unlock the portal’s true potential and embrace a future where sustainability thrives within the Smithsonian and beyond.
