There’s no place like home

This week’s CFC Cause of the Week is Housing & Shelter. A famous and often-quoted movie line touts “There’s no place like home!” But too many people around the world either don’t have a place to call home or no longer feel safe in their home. Ongoing disasters and crises have forced many families to become refugees, relying on the kindness and generosity of others for temporary shelter.

Many CFC-participating charities are working hard to provide this basic necessity for those in need around the globe. It takes billions of dollars per year to accommodate those facing unstable housing situations by funding housing programs, supporting shelter-based organizations, rehoming refugees, and providing resources to those who have limited ability to care for themselves. Here is just one example from a CFC-participating charity:

John, a U.S. Army captain, survived three deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, only to be severely wounded by an active shooter nine miles from home. His wife, Angel, did not even recognize him in the hospital. John endured a medically induced coma, painful surgery, and grueling rehab. His doctors said it was a miracle he survived, but he would never recover completely. Then, a charity stepped in to provide the family with a specially adapted, mortgage-free home. That home, built with the love, generosity, and respect from donors like the CFC community, showed John and his family that they were not forgotten.

You can provide families with a place to call home. Donate today. (Please make sure that you list 20560 for the Smithsonian Zip Code when donating.)

Here are a few more examples of how your CFC donations can help:

  • Purchase materials to build safe, affordable housing for a family in need.
  • Ensure an abused mother and child have a safe place to land.
  • Build a ramp to make a home wheelchair accessible.

What better way to give thanks this week, than to donate to help those in need through the CFC?
