2024 Education Awards will be presented April 10

Nominees and awardees of the 2024 Education Awards will be celebrated at an evening reception April 10 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Please RSVP by March 29 if you would like to attend.

Graphic showing open bookIn collaboration with Secretary Bunch and Deputy Secretary Meroë Park, Monique Chism, Under Secretary for Education, has announced the nominees and recipients of the 2024 Smithsonian Education Awards for Education Achievement, the One Smithsonian Education Award, and the Education Innovation and Access Award.

 

The Smithsonian Education Awards honor outstanding staff achievements by Smithsonian educators that open the doors to invite lifelong learners, students, families, communities, fellows, interns, and educators everywhere to discover our extraordinary programming, resources, collections, and research. The awards recognize creativity, excellence, and commitment to serving the nation through distance learning, educational programming, digital media, publications, and exhibitions. All active Smithsonian staff members are eligible for nominations.

The 2024 Awardees are:

  • Emily Key, Head of Education at the National Museum of the American Latino, receives the 2024 Education Achievement Award for her impactful career of over 20 years, collaborator spirit, bilingual community engagement, creativity, and perseverance.
  • Smithsonian Science for Global Goals Team, led by the Smithsonian Science Education Center, receives the 2024 One Smithsonian Education Award. The team’s outstanding accomplishments embody the spirit of pan-institutional internal teamwork, engagement with knowledge partners, and multi-unit collaboration which includes the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of American History, Asian Pacific American Center, and Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. The Smithsonian Science for Global Goals provides guides and support to youth around the world with the knowledge and skills to understand global issues and become agents for change in their communities.
  • The National Zoological Park and Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute’s Conservation Classroom receives the 2024 Education Innovation and Access Award. The team’s outstanding digital education project, Conservation Classroom, makes the Smithsonian’s creative and interactive content reachable and relevant nationwide for K-5 students to wonder, engage, act, and connect about and with wildlife. Through multiple modes of digital media, students learn about animal science and conservation.

Many thanks to the distinguished panel of judges who made this year’s selections from a record number of application submissions:

  • Trudi Bellardo Hahn, Ph.D., 2024 Smithsonian Women’s Committee President;
  • Sarah Brown Wessling, M.A. Director, National Teacher of the Year Program, Council of Chief State School Officers & NTOY 2010;
  • Beverly Ann Chin, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus University of Montana representing the National Council of Teachers of English; and
  • Natanya Khashan, M.A., Senior Director, Audience Development & Engagement, American Alliance of Museums.

The Smithsonian Education Awards program is generously supported by the Smithsonian Women’s Committee (SWC), endowed in honor of their fortieth anniversary of service to the Smithsonian.

The nominees and awardees will be celebrated Wednesday, April 10 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The speaking program, with a keynote by Deputy Secretary Meroë Park, will be held at the National Museum of American History’s Warner Brothers Theater immediately followed by a reception in the Presidential Suite.
